Subject: TAship in 3D modeling at UofT

Hi Eric!
My name is Paolo Granata, I’m a UofT professor in the field of Book
History and Print Culture.
For a special experiential learning project in the field of Book History
and Print Culture, we are hiring two TAs. There is a position open
- expertise in 3D design/modelling required. I hope you can help spread
the word to anyone interested.
The Project is called "3D Gutenberg", in conjunction with my SMC228
class on Book History and Print Culture.
In the same way that the invention of Gutenberg’s printing press
revolutionized the history of human knowledge in the mid-1400s, the
impact of 3D printing is now changing how we undertake humanistic
research, and how we study historical artifacts in a more engaging way.
By connecting letterpress printing – in the throes of a full-blown
revival – and 3D printing, this project aims to integrate old and new
technologies to create a hybrid experiential learning opportunity that
will aid students in the Book and Media Studies (BMS) program in their
understanding of both the modern and traditional.
This project aims to experiment and develop the effective use of 3D
printing technologies in order to revitalize the study of book history
and print culture broadly defined. It offers a needed breakthrough to
refresh bibliography and textual studies. It also aims to help bridge
the divide between modern students and traditional knowledge of the
material, cultural, aesthetic and theoretical aspects of the book by
retrieving skills in letterpress printing.
By retrieving the art of letterpress, type-setting, and moveable types
through the use of 3D printing, this project aims at developing a new
curriculum model and fostering new research practices, involving
students in experiential learning and experimental research.
We are offering two TAship positions:
*Position #1* – Expertise in 3D design/modelling (must obtain
certification to operate the 3D printers, and pass a 3D printing
knowledge test). Master in Applied Science & Engineering or Information
Studies preferred. Assisting in creation of 3D models and facilitation
of 3D printer, implementing 3D models into letterpress and typesetting,
assisting and preparation of workshops.
*Position #2 * – Documented expertise in letterpress and typesetting.
Master in Book History & Print Culture or Information Studies
preferred. Assisting and preparation of workshops, advising students,
grading assignments and final exam.
This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 4 Collective
Agreement.

Thanks!
Paolo
