[Shop] Fwd: CNC router on kijiji

Everything I’ve read about 3040 mills is that they lack rigidity because of unsupported smooth rod, versus the Omio model which has linear rails under the hood…. I honestly think it’s worth raising the funds for the Omio model would be worth it.

I’ve read stories of buyers remorse on 3040’s and the lack of rigidity causing poor tolerances on aluminum after this thread started. Perhaps we should pass up on the cobbled together version? I’ll cite some of the 3d printers being subpar cause they’re on the cheap, versus the real cost of entry into the field.

I don't think Hacklab's hit the threshold for paying half ($27k in the bank) so we'll have to fund this ourselves.

I've never played with RC motors... are they reliable, and reasonable for this application? (This is the motor used: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-trackstar-1-8th-sensored-brushless-motor-2100kv.html?___store=en_us)

I've found ball-screw upgraded 3040 available on ebay for about the same price he's asking -- so what's his home made enclosure and rc motor upgrade worth? Also, would be nice if he could throw in the original parts just in case we do want to revert something. (if they're around)

I emailed the guy, the CNC router is still available. Does anyone have any specific questions about this thing? I can email him. The kijiji ad has a video of it cutting aluminum... is that not convincing enough? (I ask because I have no clue...)

I assume we could get it for $1000, if not $900 (and hopefully Hacklab will pay half). If you think it's better to wait and get a more powerful CNC router let it be known.

Same, I'll put in $200 if this can do aluminum properly.

I know these 3040 machines are pretty popular, but don't know too much beyond that. Perhaps time to do a little research?

I'd be down to throw in 100$ if you guys think it can do aluminum. I don't know much about these things so I bow down to the council's superior judgment.

2kW seems to be the upper limit. Look up www.omiocnc.com/products/x6-2200l-usb.html <http://www.omiocnc.com/products/x6-2200l-usb.html>

These ones seem to be more proven for milling aluminum at decent passover depths (for a machine of this cost).

I think the spindle is a passive spindle shaft coupled with a belt to a 1kW RC copter motor. https://alumination.blogspot.ca/2016/06/cnc-build-overview.html
How many kW do you want on an aluminum frame? Our mill has a 1.5kW motor and it's 400kg of steel.

The 1kW spindle feels a bit anemic for any metals, is the spindle water
cooled? Air cooled will just get aluminum swarf sucked in and kill it.

Otherwise +1, $100 to the pot if it's watercooled.

Wow, that's not much more expensive than an unmodified 3040! I
think it's definitely taking a look at!

        Thoughts?

Says it's got proper linear rails and ballscrews.

shall I subliminally influence hacklab to buy it?
